The annual ceremony honours the best players of the previous season and it was McTominay who picked up the big prize.

This is a prestigious award as it is voted for by the players, and the last five winners before McTominay are Cristiano Ronaldo, Romelu Lukaku, Rafael Leao, Victor Osimhen and Lautaro Martinez.

He was already named Serie A Most Valuable Player by the league after leading the club to a historic Scudetto.

The Scotsman proved the key player for Antonio Conte's men, scoring a host of key goals in the title run-in, including the decisive opener on the final day win over Cagliari that clinched the Scudetto.

In total, McTominay scored 12 Serie A goals in the season as Man Utd were made to regret selling him.

He was subsequently nominated for the Ballon d'Or and last month he also played a key role in Scotland qualifying for their first World Cup in 28 years.

McTominay scored an incredible bicycle kick for Scotland in their decisive 4-2 win over Denmark at home.

Among the other prizes at the Gran Gala del Calcio, Antonio Conte was named manager of the year and Napoli club of the year.

The Serie A best XI of the year was as so; Svilar (Roma); Dumfries (Inter), Rrahmani (Napoli), Bastoni (Inter), Dimarco (Inter); McTominay (Napoli), Barella (Inter), Reijnders (Milan); Lautaro Martinez (Inter), Kean (Fiorentina), Retegui (Atalanta).
