Timeline for €40m Man Utd deal set as star convinced move will happen
Joshua Zirkzee is convinced that he will become a new AS Roma player in January, but Manchester United have a clear timeframe for the deal in mind, according to Italian media.
Over the past month, the Netherlands international was afforded a few chances by Ruben Amorim due to Benjamin Sesko recovering from an injury. However, with the exception of a goal against Crystal Palace in November, Zirkzee was unable to make the most of his opportunities.
He was unable to do much in his 30-minute cameo against Newcastle on Boxing Day and is now fully convinced that his time at Man Utd is over. According to Alfredo Pedulla, Zirkzee considers this chapter of his career "closed."
The 24-year-old has agreed to a January move to AS Roma, who are reportedly ready to offer Man Utd a €40 million package, consisting of an initial loan that will become permanent if they qualify for the Champions League.
Pedulla reports that this deal is on track to happen, but he also acknowledges that the timeline is not "tight," meaning that this deal is not guaranteed to go through in the early days of the window.
Zirkzee to complete Roma move in mid-January
Gazzetta dello Sport echoes this. The Italian publication writes that Zirkzee "should be in Rome by mid-January." Man Utd are reluctant to sanction a quick deal because of the Africa Cup of Nations.
Once Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo return from the tournament in Morocco, Amorim is ready to greenlight Zirkzee's departure. Until then, however, he must bide his time.
This is not so much an issue for Zirkzee, despite his conviction that he will leave, as it is for Roma. The Giallorossi desperately need offensive reinforcements. Even though they sit fifth in Serie A, only five teams have scored fewer goals than them so far this term.
Because of Man Utd's reluctance to let Zirkzee leave early in the window, Roma are now also in talks with Atletico Madrid to complete a deal for Giacomo Raspadori. Roma, Pedulla reports, are confident of striking a €20m deal for the 25-year-old.
