'Desperate' Greenwood changes game for Man Utd with controversial €114m transfer
Manchester United could play a huge part in a contentious big money transfer with Mason Greenwood being lined up for a sensational €100 million transfer to Barcelona.
Greenwood has been a standout performer for Marseille since joining them from United last year but the 24-year-old remains a highly controversial figure after his 2022 charges for attempted rape and coercive behaviour, which were eventually dropped.
The forward’s form has elevated this year - only three players in Europe’s top five leagues have scored more goals than him - leading to his name being brought into the public light again.
And, according to TEAMtalk, Greenwood is ‘desperate’ to demonstrate his ‘world-class potential’ by instructing his representatives to orchestrate a ‘high-profile’ transfer to one of Europe’s elite clubs.
It is alleged that Greenwood’s camp has also adopted a ‘strategic’ PR plan to enlist some of the industry’s most influential journalists to ‘disseminate positive narratives’ through regular features highlighting his on-the-pitch qualities and his maturity.
Barcelona are believed to be demonstrating a ‘keen interest’ in Greenwood, with Marseille quoted as being ready to demand as much as £100m (€114m) in a deal that would net United 50% of any profit on his initial €31.4m sale and give them a game-changing boost to their finances.
Finances leading ethics in modern football with Mason Greenwood transfer
The discourse around Greenwood has continued to be a divisive topic, with an apparent consensus in England that the player should never be given the opportunity to return to the Premier League or be considered for selection for the national team.
United were heavily criticised for attempting to reintegrate Greenwood back into their squad after his charges were dropped due to a ‘withdrawal of key witnesses’, despite video and audio evidence being circulated on social media.
It remains almost certain that Greenwood will never be welcomed back to English football. However, across Europe, growing interest in the attacker and the continued noise surrounding a big-money transfer suggest a more lenient stance will be taken on him, even with Marseille having to deal with backlash following their decision to sign him in the summer of 2023.
A move to Barcelona would represent a reversal of the club’s previous decision to opt against a move for him after his loan spell at Getafe, having considered the off-field implications of his signing.
Greenwood being celebrated at the highest level could only further trivialise the controversies surrounding him, much to the dismay of women’s rights activists and supporter factions.
But, with an elite impact on the pitch and the likes of Marseille and United benefitting handsomely financially from any deal, it appears Greenwood may still return to the big time, irrespective of any moral objections.
