Enzo Maresca drops January transfer hint amid Chelsea feud speculation
Enzo Maresca has hinted that Chelsea may not be particularly active during the January transfer window by confirming that he is yet to discuss any potential signings with the club’s hierarchy.
The Blues spent €336.9 million on nine new players over the summer and reports have suggested they will wait until the 2025-26 season has concluded before dipping back into the transfer market.
This belief has now been reinforced by Maresca, who has suggested that his first-team squad is unlikely to be bolstered by many mid-season additions.
When asked if he has held discussions with the Chelsea hierarchy over any winter transfers, Maresca told reporters: “No, in this moment there is no time for nothing, just time to focus about the next [game] and then we see what is happening.
“I’m delighted and very happy with the squad that we have.”
Maresca was then quizzed on his relationship with the Chelsea hierarchy amid significant rumours of a rift following his comments after the club’s 2-0 victory over Everton on Saturday.
“It’s ok, it’s good,” he replied. Asked if the head coach is the most important person at a football club, Maresca added: “I think the ones that put the money in are, not the manager.
“It is the owner. I think they are the most important people in a football club. The manager is an important part but is not the most important one.”
Chelsea’s January targets
Although Maresca has hinted that Chelsea are unlikely to be very active in January, the Blues have been linked with a number of players over the past few weeks.
It’s reported that Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton is their top midfield target amid concerns over Romeo Lavia’s continued injury woes, while Strasbourg’s Valentin Barco is seen as an alternative.
The Blues remain eager to sign Nottingham Forest defender Murillo, despite the impressive recent form of Trevoh Chalobah and Wesley Fofana, and they have also been linked with moves for both Joaquin Panichelli (Strasbourg) and Samu Aghehowa (Porto).
Chelsea are, however, expected to retain faith with Robert Sanchez and a new goalkeeper is therefore unlikely to arrive.
