Mikel Arteta has confirmed that Arsenal will be "actively looking" to make January signings.

The Gunners have been sitting pretty at the summit of the Premier League for months. However, draws with Sunderland and Chelsea, as well as a loss to Aston Villa, have allowed Man City to close the gap to just two points.

Arsenal have made hard work of recent results, not helped by the fact that Arteta has had to make major alterations to his defence due to injuries and fatigue. Against Brighton at the weekend, his backline consisted of Declan Rice, William Saliba, Piero Hincapie and Myles Lewis-Skelly.

Competing on multiple fronts is beginning to take its toll on the North London club, so it is no surprise that Arteta has announced that Arsenal could be active in the January market. "The window is there, and I mean we are Arsenal, and we have to be looking at it," he said.

"'Okay, what do we need?' And we have to be actively looking, and then, whether we can do it or not, that's a different story. But our job is to always be very prepared because something can happen, so hopefully it'll be very positive."

Who could Arsenal sign in January?

Given that Arsenal have been the cream of the crop in the Premier League this term, speculation surrounding transfers has been relatively quiet. The Gunners are simply too much of a well-oiled machine to have any problems that urgently need addressing.

As a result, Andrea Berta's main focus has been on agreeing new contracts with key players. However, some incoming business has still been on the agenda, primarily focused on building for the future. The Quintero twins, Edwin and Holger, will join the club when they turn 18.

Additionally, former Napoli chief scout Maurizio Micheli began his work as part of Berta's recruitment team last week. He arrives with a sparkling reputation, having unearthed several gems in Italy.

The most high-profile transfer of January is likely to be that of Antoine Semenyo, but Arsenal have refused to enter the race despite long-standing admiration for him. They would only have pursued a deal for him in the summer.

Arsenal will likely be looking at potential defensive reinforcements, given their recent injury crisis, but they could also add a midfielder. It has been widely reported by credible sources that the Gunners have been keenly scouting Elche youngster Rodrigo Mendoza in recent months.

The 20-year-old Spanish youth international has a €20 million release clause, and journalist Ben Jacobs believes that it is possible that Arsenal place a bid for him next month.
