Former Rangers boss Russell Martin is among the names approached by Norwich City as they look for a new head coach, according to a report.

The 39-year-old has seen his formerly promising coaching career severely tarnished by recent stints at Southampton and Rangers. After getting Saints promoted back to the Premier League, he oversaw one of the worst runs of results in league history before being sacked.

His Rangers tenure was even more dismal. Unpopular with the fanbase from day one, Martin only lasted four months and was fired in October following a 1-1 draw with Falkirk, which left the Ibrox club eighth in the Premiership table.

Such was his unpopularity with the supporters, Martin had to be escorted off the premises of Falkirk's stadium by the police. However, despite all of the above, he could now make a swift return to management.

According to Sky Sports, Martin is in the frame for the job at his former club Norwich City following their inevitable sacking of Liam Manning on Saturday.

Martin, O'Neil eyed by Norwich

Manning, a Norfolk native who spent time in Norwich's academy, as well as that of East Anglia rivals Ipswich, was appointed by the Canaries in the summer following a successful season at Bristol City, which saw them make the Championship playoffs for the first time in 17 years.

However, much like Martin's stint at Rangers, the 40-year-old's time in charge of Norwich will go down as one of the worst in club history. Having won just three of his 17 matches in charge, he was relieved of his duties with the Carrow Road outfit 23rd in the table.

Norwich are now looking for their fourth permanent head coach since sacking Daniel Farke in 2021. According to the above-mentioned report, Martin has been approached by the Canaries.

The former Scotland international spent nine years playing for Norwich and eventually became club captain. A hugely popular figure at the club, some fans are worried that a poor coaching spell could tarnish his legacy.

Whether Martin is keen to return is a different question, of course. The same goes for another former player in Gary O'Neil, who made half a century of appearances for the Canaries.

Contact with him has also been made, but it is doubtful whether he would be willing to lead a team sitting 23rd in the Championship when he just rejected a return to Premier League side Wolves.
