United have for some time been against loaning Mainoo out but have now opened up on the proviso they find a replacement.

The report states that United have drawn up a three-man midfield shortlist to replace Mainoo.

Atletico Madrid’s Conor Gallagher, Sporting CP’s Morten Hjulmand and Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson are the three names on the list.

All three would be expensive but United are insistent that they have to sign a top replacement if they are to let the English wonderkid leave.

Mainoo is unhappy about the lack of playing time he is getting under Ruben Amorim and has made it clear to United chiefs he wants a dry loan until the end of the season.

Napoli are closing in on signing the player on loan, having been keen on signing him in the last days of the summer window, only to be told by Man Utd he was not available.

Napoli are even more eager to do this deal now after Billy Gilmour became the latest player to suffer an injury during the draw with Como on Saturday.

The Neapolitans are decimated right now, especially in midfield, and last week lost Kevin de Bruyne for four months with a serious injury.

Aston Villa, Newcastle, Real Madrid and Barcelona are all said to be interested also in Mainoo.

The midfielder is frustrated that he has only started 12 of Ruben Amorim's 35 Premier League games in charge at United.

And he is pushing for a loan move for the second half of the season in order to aid his development and to try and get back into the England squad for the World Cup.

Mainoo was not part of Thomas Tuchel's latest squad due to a lack of minutes at United.

The England midfielder has been a substitute in every single Premier League game this season. He only started the EFL Cup defeat to Grimsby.

Mainoo has made 78 appearances for Man Utd since his senior debut in 2022-23 and has also been capped 10 times by England, playing at Euro 2024.
