Man Utd eye €25m January deal after striker U-turn
Manchester United are ready to allow Joshua Zirkzee to pursue a move to AS Roma in January, but only on one condition, according to Italian media.
The Netherlands international is expected to demand a winter move away in a bid to salvage his World Cup dream. Zirkzee has plummeted down the pecking order for his country due to his lack of minutes at Man Utd and wants to rectify this with a loan transfer.
However, there have been question marks over the Red Devils' willingness to sanction such a deal, especially in light of Benjamin Sesko's recent injury, although it is not a serious one.
It has been thought that Man Utd would only sanction a loan if they can manage to get a replacement for Zirkzee in, and if his new club covers the entirety of his wages.
However, Il Messaggero now reports that a potential January loan deal actually hinges on something completely different.
Man Utd want €25m for Zirkzee
The Italian outlet claims that the crucial aspect of Zirkzee's proposed loan exit is actually whether or not a permanent element is attached to the deal. The report states that Man Utd are willing to sanction a loan deal, but only if it includes a purchase option of at least €25 million.
AS Roma are currently exploring a deal for the former Bologna man, but it is unclear if they could commit to such an outlay, given their well-publicised financial concerns at present. Roma stand accused of having breached UEFA's spending rules and are trying to be cautious in 2026.
Zirkzee is said to be keen on a return to Serie A, but recent reports have suggested that his agent, Kia Joorabchian, is pushing for him to stay in the more lucrative Premier League. It was Joorabchian who took Zirkzee to Man Utd after allegedly scuppering a move to AC Milan last year.
The Dutchman also has suitors in England. West Ham and Everton have both enquired about his potential availability, and agreeing to a €25m purchase option would be much more straightforward for them than for Roma.
