Man Utd make final transfer decision over €85m star
Manchester United have taken a decisive decision over the future of Jadon Sancho, according to reports.
Signed from Borussia Dortmund in 2021 for €85 million, Sancho was expected to be a key figure at Old Trafford but instead has struggled to find any gametime whatsoever.
He has spent loan spells at Dortmund and Chelsea, and he now finds himself with Aston Villa. The 25-year-old’s fortunes have not picked up any in Birmingham. He has yet to start a Premier League match and has made eight appearances for Villa without a goal or an assist.
This form has left the Red Devils unimpressed, but with the player out of contract at the end of the season and the possibility of triggering a one-year extension to prevent him leaving on a free transfer, what will United do?
Man Utd learn from previous mistakes
Ruben Amorim’s side have already decided to cut their losses on the England winger and will not renew his contract, Fichajes reports.
With an estimated wage of around €200,000 per week, the club feel that they are haemorrhaging money on a player who has made only 83 matches and was involved in just 18 goals.
“The club believes it no longer makes sense to maintain a relationship that has not yielded the expected results, either on or off the pitch,” Fichajes reports.
“Letting him go without a contract renewal means accepting a loss, but it avoids a high wage bill and frees up space in the squad. Manchester United, in the midst of a rebuild, are looking for players with a greater immediate impact and a competitive attitude.”
Man Utd’s decision to cut ties with the player, meanwhile, is said to be symbolic of the new direction the club is taking, which is said to “acknowledge past mistakes” in order to build a better team going forward.
What next for Sancho?
Sancho continues to be linked with a move back to Dortmund, where he enjoyed his best football. During his previous loan stint back in Germany, he showed signs of regaining his previous powers.
Should BVB decide against signing Sancho, though, it’s unclear what his next steps will be as he will be a coveted free agent.
