Fabrizio Romano confirms January Man Utd transfer
Manchester United defender Tyrell Malacia is likely to leave the club in January despite recently returning to the first-team fold, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The Netherlands international has endured a tough time at Old Trafford since joining in 2022. He finally returned to full fitness after more than a year out injured in late 2024, but the club had evolved beyond the need for him.
Erik ten Hag, who had signed him, was sacked in October 2024 and replaced by Ruben Amorim, who did not deem Malacia suitable for his system. As a result, he was loaned to Dutch side PSV in January.
However, PSV opted against signing him permanently, so he returned to Man Utd in the summer. Despite talks with clubs in Turkey and Spain, no move materialised, and he remained on the books when the window closed.
Malacia was a member of Man Utd's 'Bomb Squad' and was not training with the first team. However, he was recently brought back into the fold, although that is unlikely to change his future.
Malacia to leave Man Utd in 2026
According to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, Malacia remains on the chopping block and will not stay at Man Utd beyond 2026. In fact, his contract is up at the end of the season, so Man Utd could push him out in January for a nominal fee.
"At the moment, the most likely scenario is to part ways," Romano told GIVEMESPORT of Malacia. "This remains the intention on the club's side for the future."
It remains to be seen where Malacia will end up, though. Clubs are unlikely to be queuing up for the left-back in January, and those that are will surely try to agree a pre-contract with him for the summer.
It is also unclear if Malacia will actually play for Man Utd again, despite his return to the first team. He was an unused substitute against Brighton in late October but hasn't made a matchday squad since.
