Manchester United will test Nottingham Forest's resolve with a sizeable January bid for Elliot Anderson, according to a report.

The Red Devils have earmarked the England star as a potential midfield reinforcement for 2026, alongside several other players such as Carlos Baleba, Angelo Stiller, Adam Wharton and Conor Gallagher.

Gallagher is understood to be the most attainable target in January, as he is keen to return to the Premier League, but that does not mean that Man Utd will put all their eggs in one basket and ignore their other options.

Indeed, according to TEAMtalk, the Old Trafford club are plotting a 'giant January bid' not for Gallagher, but for Anderson. There is even some confidence that they could prise him away from Nottingham Forest mid-season as he is 'very keen' on the move.

The 23-year-old put in an impressive shift against his potential new employer on Saturday and won over many a Man Utd supporter. It is thought that his energy and passing ability would be a game-changer for the Red Devils' midfield.

The report claims that Forest are demanding an initial €90 million for Anderson, which is a far cry from the €137m figure that has been previously touted in the media.

However, this price tag is still way too hefty as far as Man Utd are concerned. They are planning to start the bidding at around €70m, and it is not clear if they are willing - or able - to go higher.

Despite Forest being under no pressure to sell, and also having no intention to do so, it is asserted that there is optimism at Old Trafford that a deal can be struck.

It has been a difficult start to the season for Forest, and they are aware that selling their best midfielder could doom Sean Dyche's rescue efforts. Nevertheless, Man Utd feel that Anderson's supposed desire to take the next step could prove pivotal in softening their rivals' stance.
