Chelsea join Tottenham in race to sign 25-goal striker in January
Chelsea have joined Tottenham in the race to sign Juventus striker Jonathan David in January, according to Italian media.
The Canada international is enduring a torrid time in Serie A after joining Juventus on a free transfer in the summer. Although a Bosman deal, David was a significant investment by the Old Lady as he is on a handsome wage and received a significant signing-on fee.
He earned it, too. During his five years at Lille, the 25-year-old had emerged as one of Europe's most exciting strikers and was being courted by a host of elite suitors.
In his last season in France, David scored an impressive 25 goals, so there was palpable excitement when he opted to join Juventus, especially since Dusan Vlahovic had flattered to deceive since his €83.5 million move in 2022.
However, expectations have been turned upside down this season as Vlahovic, who is out of contract in the summer, has emerged as Juventus' most reliable striker, while David has only netted once, having merely been a substitute in around half of his games.
Chelsea enter David race
Because of his difficult start to life in Italy, David has been linked with a January exit for weeks. Although transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has tried to downplay this speculation, it continues unabated in the Italian press.
Tottenham are the side most persistently associated with a move for the misfiring forward, but Tuttomercatoweb has now added Chelsea to his list of supposed suitors.
The Blues have struggled to get the best out of their strikers so far this season. Joao Pedro was spectacular in his first few games, but his goals have dried up lately. Liam Delap has failed to impress in limited minutes since his lengthy hamstring injury.
It is claimed that Chelsea and Spurs are 'assessing' David's situation and that Juventus could be tempted to cash in on him in January, given that any fee would technically represent a profit.
However, it seems doubtful that Chelsea would look to sign the struggling Canadian for a fee when they could have secured his signature on a Bosman deal in the summer.
David has been on their radar for years, so they would have pounced had they felt that he would have been a suitable signing in the previous window.
