Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini has confirmed that he would “like” to leave Serie A at some point during his career following significant transfer interest from Chelsea.

The Italy international has been heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge for several seasons and the Blues are reportedly continuing to track his development at Atalanta, despite the fact he recently signed a new contract until 2031.

Scalvini, 22, has already racked up 144 first-team appearances for Atalanta and he is firmly on Newcastle United’s radar as they look to bolster the defensive options at Matthias Jaissle’s disposal.

Meanwhile, it’s claimed that Chelsea made enquiries over a possible deal during the recent summer transfer window, with the Blues monitoring his progress in Bergamo despite his recent contract extension.

Speaking to reporters about his new deal ahead of Italy’s Nations League clash against France on Friday evening, Scalvini admitted (via Football Italia): “I’ve always been there [Atalanta], and I’ve extended because I’ve always felt good.

“At the same time, I understand those who change clubs and go abroad. One day I’d like to do that to learn new things and new concepts, but I’m already doing it at Atalanta.”

Manchester City and Manchester United are also reportedly interested in signing Scalvini, although it appears as though Chelsea and Newcastle are the current frontrunners in the race to lure him away from Italy.

Will Chelsea sign Giorgio Scalvini?

While Scalvini has confirmed his desire to leave Serie A in the future, it seems highly unlikely that he will be sold by Atalanta next year following his decision to sign a contract extension over the summer.

His Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) currently stands at €29.3 million, although this has dipped significantly from a peak of just over €60m back in September 2024, with the Italy defender suffering from a number of injury issues over the past two years.

Chelsea bolstered their centre-back roster with the signing of Maxence Lacroix during the recent summer transfer window and with new boss Xabi Alonso a keen admirer of academy graduate Josh Acheampong, it appears unlikely that Scalvini will move to Stamford Bridge in 2027.
