Barcelona target Julian Alvarez confirms transfer rumours are TRUE
Julian Alvarez has opened up on the possibility of leaving Atletico Madrid in an interview – and the Barcelona target has not dismissed the prospect of a move soon.
Alvarez decided to leave Manchester City little over a year ago in a €75 million deal that took him to Spain.
While Atleti might not have been at their best, under Diego Simeone, the 25-year-old has thrived, scoring 38 goals in 68 games.
Such a prolific return has seen fresh transfer rumours over his future return. Barcelona and PSG are both thought to be interested in the dynamic forward, with the possibility of a €200 million transfer mooted.
While it seems far-fetched to suggest that either of these clubs will invest such a sum of money in their squad during 2026, Alvarez has, nonetheless, spoken of the possibility of leaving the Wanda Metropolitano.
Speaking to France Football, he was asked directly about the transfer rumours.
“Frankly, I don’t know. I see what’s said on social media,” he replied.
“In Spain, they speak a lot about me and Barcelona. When I signed for Atletico Madrid last year, we spoke a lot about PSG.
“It’s true, there were discussions between PSG and my agent. They showed an interest to sign me, but it wasn’t done.
“For the moment, I’m concentrated on Atletico Madrid. We’ll take stock at the end of the season.”
Barca priced out of Alvarez deal
Barcelona are unlikely to be able to afford Alvarez come next summer. The Catalan side are struggling to stump up the €29m required to sign Marcus Rashford from Manchester United permanently, so the prospect of signing the Argentine appears distant for the moment.
Alvarez is one of the most valuable players in the world, with his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) sitting at €121.5m.
He is one of just seven players above the €120m mark, with Barcelona already represented in the form of Pau Cubarsi (€136m) and Lamine Yamal, who is the world’s most valuable player with an ETV of €183m.
