Chelsea restart talks with Mike Maignan as eye-catching offer made
Chelsea have restarted talks with AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan as they look for a replacement for Filip Jorgensen, according to a report.
The Blues attempted to sign the France international in the summer, only to have their efforts frustrated by AC Milan. The Serie A giants were unwilling to part with a world-class goalkeeper on the cheap, while Chelsea did not want to break the bank on a player with a year left on his deal.
Maignan is now in the final months of his contract, and the Rossoneri are desperately trying to get him to sign an extension as he is currently at the peak of his powers. The 30-year-old was the hero in the Milan Derby at the weekend, saving a penalty from Hakan Calhanoglu.
Milan have made the goalkeeper a new contract offer worth a whopping €5 million annually, which Italian media has described as 'unusually generous' for a player on the wrong side of 30.
Despite this, the threat of a summer departure on a free transfer continues to be a credible one. In fact, it seems that Milan are fighting a losing battle as Chelsea are now back in the mix.
Chelsea restart Maignan talks
At least that is according to Sacha Tavolieri, who claims that Chelsea have reignited contact with the Frenchman to sound out the possibility of a move in 2026.
Maignan had agreed terms with the West London club in the summer, so it will likely not be too difficult for Chelsea to convince him to make the move next year.
Chelsea are described as 'the most determined club' in the race to sign Maignan, despite initially planning not to bring in a goalkeeper in 2026. However, Filip Jorgensen's request for a January transfer has changed the situation.
The Blues now believe that they must add a new shot-stopper, and Maignan is the obvious choice. He would be a clear upgrade on Jorgensen and the current first choice Robert Sanchez.
A move in January appears out of the question, which is why Chelsea do not want to sanction Jorgensen's exit mid-season, but they should have the necessary depth to be able to cope without the Dane for a few months.
Highly-rated American shot-stopper Gabriel Slonina is still on the books at Stamford Bridge.
