Arsenal make U-TURN on major January transfer
Arsenal have reportedly made a transfer u-turn on Gabriel Jesus, with the Brazil forward now set to remain at the club in January.
The 28-year-old, who has been ruled out of action through an ACL injury for the past 10 months, has been heavily linked with a mid-season departure amid interest from Brazilian clubs Flamengo and Palmeiras.
It was previously understood that Arsenal were willing to sanction a sale following the summer arrival of Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP and several Premier League teams have reportedly been monitoring his situation ahead of a possible winter bid.
However, Arsenal have now opted to block a January transfer in favour of keeping Jesus at the club, as per CaughtOffside.
The Brazil striker’s current contract in north London is due to expire in 2027, but Arsenal reportedly have no intention of allowing a sale as they believe he is capable of helping their bid to end a five-trophy drought.
Mikel Arteta on Gabriel Jesus
Reports that Arsenal are now set to keep Jesus until at least next summer align with Arteta’s comments ahead of their 2-2 draw against Sunderland on Saturday evening.
When asked if he wants Jesus to stay at the club, Arteta admitted to reporters: “Yes because we haven’t had [our forwards] and now we don’t have Viktor [Gyokeres] and we haven’t had Kai [Havertz] again for three months or many other forwards.
“Unfortunately, that’s becoming something that consistently happens, so we need those options and what an option to have with Gabi.
“[He is] a player who is very unpredictable, full of energy, and super competitive. A player who comes from a context of difficulty in the last few seasons, due to various nasty injuries, so the level of hunger and desire that he is going to bring to the team is going to be amazing.
“So I’m thrilled to have him, I think he’s going to add something extra to the team that we don’t have, and make sure that very soon we see him on that pitch making an impact for the team.
“It's about making the steps day by day in a different surrounding. He's been doing everything on his own; now he's got very competitive players around him, and let’s see how he copes with that.
“But he's full of energy, I love the reaction of all his team-mates when he first joined us, and it's great to have him back.”
