Kevin Muscat with free run at Rangers job as Danny Rohl PULLS OUT
Danny Rohl has withdrawn from contention for the Rangers job, leaving favourite Kevin Muscat with a free run at the role.
The German had emerged as one of the top options following Steve Gerrard's decision to pull out of talks with club bosses despite an agreement looking close at one point.
Rohl, who was previously described as chomping at the bit to get the Rangers job, has now followed Gerrard in removing his name from the running for the position, which has been vacant since 5 October.
The 36-year-old's decision is likely driven by the fact that he was staring a second rejection in a matter of months in the face, having been snubbed before Russell Martin's ill-fated appointment.
On Tuesday, it was revealed that former Gers player Kevin Muscat had moved into pole position ahead of Rohl, and Sky Sports confirmed this earlier on Wednesday.
Rohl pulls out, Muscat clear favourite
Despite his enthusiasm for the job and the good impression he left during talks last week, the prospect of coming away empty-handed again probably compelled Rohl to proactively walk away before getting another formal rejection.
It looks to be Muscat's position to lose now, and a final decision from Ibrox chiefs is expected shortly. However, even if given the job, the Australian may not be of immediate help.
The former treble-winner is currently chasing his second Chinese Super League title with Shanghai Port. There are four games left to play, and Muscat's men are two points clear of Chengdu Rongcheng and three clear of rivals Shanghai Shenhua.
It has been posited that Neil McCann could be given interim charge of the side if Shanghai Port were to refuse to release Muscat from his contract early. U19s boss Steven Smith is currently overseeing Rangers' first-team training.
