Manchester United will be rivalled by Manchester City for the signature of Sporting CP captain Morten Hjulmand, according to Portuguese media.

The Denmark international is known to be a player greatly admired by Red Devils boss Ruben Amorim. The former Sporting head coach made Hjulmand his captain and described him as a more complete midfielder than predecessors Manuel Ugarte and Joao Palhinha.

In the summer, there was tentative interest from Man Utd, but no move materialised because Sporting, having already lost star striker Viktor Gyokeres, insisted that his €80 million release clause be triggered.

Hjulmand is now once again being associated with a move to Old Trafford, perhaps as early as January. He was keen on the transfer in the summer, and Man Utd are reportedly confident that they could get him for around €50 million in 2026.

Sporting coach Rui Borges has insisted that he is not thinking about the January transfer window in October, but speculation over Hjulmand's future is ramping up as the new window gets closer.

Man City also want Hjulmand

According to Record, Man Utd are far from Hjulmand's only admirers. In fact, the Portuguese outlet reports that Man City have also taken a liking to the 26-year-old.

It is claimed that there could be a January battle between Amorim and his former Sporting director Hugo Viana, now in charge of transfers at Man City.

In recent weeks, there had already been rumours in Portugal that asserted that Sporting are planning to give Hjulmand an improved contract to keep him for at least one more year.

President Frederico Varandas confirmed after the summer window that the Dane had turned down lucrative transfers that could have seen him triple his salary in favour of staying in Lisbon.

It remains to be seen if Hjulmand is willing to extend his stay in Portugal's capital, but as far as Sporting are concerned, they are determined to keep hold of him at least until the summer. They do not want to lose their captain in January and ideally want him to sign a new long-term deal.
