Fabrizio Romano drops update on €50m Man Utd transfer
Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano insists that Manchester United 'maintain their trust' in Manuel Ugarte despite recently revealing that he could leave in 2026.
The Uruguay international has struggled to come to grips with life at Old Trafford since joining in a €50 million deal in 2024. Like his predecessor, Sofyan Amrabat, the previous year, Ugarte was chased all summer, only to end up underperforming at Man Utd.
The 24-year-old has been unable to dislodge the ageing Casemiro, and there appears to be a real scenario where the Brazilian actually outlives him at Man Utd.
The 33-year-old has been widely expected to leave on a free transfer next year, but recent reports suggest that he could be handed an extension if he agrees to lower his hefty salary.
As for Ugarte, he may jump ship next year to salvage what used to be a hugely promising career during his time at Sporting CP. Fabrizio Romano recently revealed that he fielded interest from Serie A in the summer, and he expects Italian clubs to return for him in 2026.
Man Utd still trust Ugarte
However, it is too early to make any guarantees that Ugarte will leave. Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Romano has now insisted that Man Utd still 'trust' the Uruguayan and are not actively forcing him out.
"Of course, performances haven't always been excellent, but the coach and club maintain their trust in Ugarte," the market expert said. "They hope for improvement soon."
Links with a departure come amid Man Utd's well-established interest in signing a new player in Ugarte's position. The Red Devils tried and failed to bring in Brighton youngster Carlos Baleba in the summer.
Adam Wharton and Jobe Bellingham have also been mentioned as targets in recent times, with Romano confirming the Old Trafford club's interest in the former. However, a January move has been ruled out for both the Crystal Palace star and Baleba.
