Manuel Ugarte could leave Manchester United in 2026 after receiving interest from Serie A this summer, according to Fabrizio Romano.

It has been a dreadful start to the season for the Red Devils, and the Uruguay international has come under fire for his performance against Man City at the weekend.

Man Utd legend Gary Neville slammed Ugarte for being 'not good enough' as the Old Trafford club were comfortably defeated by their local rivals, with the midfield once again proving a major problem.

Given that Man Utd failed to sign Carlos Baleba in the summer, it is unsurprising that beefing up the middle of the park remains on the agenda, although whether Ruben Amorim will survive long enough as head coach to address the situation remains to be seen.

Bringing in fresh faces for the midfield will likely see some current players make way. Casemiro, for one, is expected to leave Man Utd in 2026, and Fabrizio Romano has now added Ugarte to the list of potential departees as well.

Ugarte to leave Man Utd?

Speaking on his YouTube channel, the transfer insider revealed that Ugarte received interest from Serie A over the summer. However, Man Utd blocked his exit as only a loan move appeared to be on the table.

"For Manuel Ugarte, there was the possibility of an exit this summer because, for example, Italian clubs were interested in Ugarte, but Man Utd decided to close the door to a potential loan move, so this is why nothing happened," he said.

"For Ugarte, we will have to see if some club will arrive with a permanent deal proposal in 2026 because this might change the situation. At the moment, Ugarte, who started the Manchester Derby, has the confidence of Amorim, has been working very hard.

"But there is interest from Italy, so that could be a case to follow in the upcoming months." Ugarte only joined Man Utd in 2024 for a sizeable €50 million from PSG and is under contract until 2029.
