EXCLUSIVE: Everton face transfer fight to keep hold of star after Pickford contract renewal
Everton could lose one of their star players on a free transfer with interest emerging across Europe in a player that the Toffees are desperate to renew the contract of, FootballTransfers understands.
The Merseyside outfit were boosted this week with the announcement of Jordan Pickford signing a new four-year contract with the club and declaring that the ‘dark days are behind us’.
Everton are still looking towards securing the future of a number of other players who are in the final year of their contract such as James Tarkowski and James Garner, the latter whom has been linked with a return to boyhood club Manchester United.
However, FootballTransfers has been told that teams across Spain and Italy have been monitoring the situation surrounding Vitaliy Mykolenko, whose deal is also set to expire next summer.
Everton are understood to have an option to extend Mykolenko’s contract for a further year, meaning they are not in danger of losing him on a free transfer, and they are intending to keep hold of the 26-year-old.
But, should a significant offer come in for Mykolenko, Everton could cash in on the Ukrainian international despite their desire to tie him down to a fresh deal in the near future.
Talks ongoing with Mykolenko after strong start to Everton’s season
Mykolenko joined Everton in 2022 for €23.5 million from Shakhtar and the left-back has become an integral figure in the team’s backline since, making more than 120 appearances for the club in all competitions.
David Moyes is said to think highly of Mykolenko and does not wish to let his only left-back leave the club, although Everton would consider big offers if they can sign another option in the process.
Fabrizio Romano had reported in January that talks had opened over a renewal between Everton and Mykolenko but no deal appears to have been struck as of yet.
Moyes’ side have been buoyed by a positive start to the season at their new stadium which has seen Everton climb to eighth in the Premier League, which is their best opening of a campaign in five years.
