Transfer insider David Ornstein has hailed new Rangers boss Danny Rohl as a 'really good coach.'

The German was appointed by the Ibrox giants on Monday after a topsy-turvy managerial hunt that saw Rangers rejected by their three top targets, including Rohl himself.

Steven Gerrard held positive talks over a return to the club where he won the 2021 Premiership title, but he had second thoughts and pulled out. Rohl then looked to be the favourite, but he, too, removed his name from contention when it seemed that the club hierarchy was leaning more towards former player Kevin Muscat.

An agreement with Muscat looked to be close, but it was ultimately never finalised because the Australian wanted more control over transfers than the club were ready to afford him with their new-look recruitment structure.

The increasingly desperate Rangers bosses reengaged with Rohl and were able to change the 36-year-old's mind, with his appointment announced in time for him to get a few training sessions in with his players before they travel to Norway to face Brann in the Europa League on Thursday.

Ornstein gives Rohl verdict

Rohl arrives in Glasgow with a sparkling reputation, having worked miracles at chaos club Sheffield Wednesday before quitting in the summer due to disagreements with controversial owner Dejphon Chansiri.

Speaking to Sky Sports, journalist David Ornstein gave his thoughts on the appointment, and his verdict is certainly a positive one. "Yeah, it was Steven Gerrard initially," Ornstein began.

"And then Rohl did come into the equation. And of course, there were some other candidates like Muscat, but Rohl has got the nod, despite the toxicity and the febrile atmosphere at Ibrox at the moment.

"But this is a really good coach, 36 years old. He's sort of shown himself at Sheffield Wednesday in the second tier, but also as assistant for the Germany national team, Southampton, Bayern Munich.

"And you know, they're scarred by the Russell Martin experience, the Rangers fans, but Danny Rohl has the potential to be a top coach, and I'm sure Rangers will be hoping and thinking that finally, at the end of this protracted process, that they've got themselves a good fit.

"And boy, do they need to get winning matches."
