Final Chelsea decision on Maignan signing sets up controversial transfer
AC Milan star Mike Maignan is attracting interest from Serie A rivals Juventus following Chelsea's decision not to sign a new goalkeeper in 2026, according to Italian media.
The France international is out of contract next year and will be able to negotiate a free transfer from January onwards. Maignan could have already left Milan in the summer, but a move to Chelsea fell through.
Due to his contract situation, the Blues viewed him as a market opportunity rather than a priority signing. When Milan demanded double what Chelsea had internally valued Maignan at, they simply left the talks, having had bids for €10 million and €15m rejected.
There were persistent rumours until the end of the window that the West London club could revisit the deal before the deadline, and the speculation has continued even beyond the close of the transfer period, given the 30-year-old's availability in 2026.
However, it was revealed earlier this week that Chelsea are not planning to sign a new goalkeeper next year. Youngster Mike Penders is impressing on loan at Strasbourg and will compete for the No.1 spot when he returns to Stamford Bridge next summer.
Juventus eye move for Maignan
Chelsea dropping out of the race for Maignan has now emboldened Juventus to register their interest in the highly-rated goalkeeper, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.
The Italian publication reports that the Bianconeri have taken a similar view of Maignan as Chelsea did in the summer. He is not an urgent priority but simply an opportunity too good to pass up.
Current first-choice goalkeeper Michele di Gregorio has faced some criticism, so Juventus are not averse to signing an affordable upgrade. However, should they fail to agree a deal for the AC Milan captain, they will continue to back Di Gregorio.
The report adds that Bayern Munich are also interested in Maignan. A move to the reigning Bundesliga champions will surely hinge on the future of Manuel Neuer, though.
The 39-year-old is still playing well and will be able to freely decide if he wants to extend his contract by a further year or retire. If Neuer stays, Bayern won't sign a new goalkeeper and will sell perennial loanee Alexander Nubel, currently at Stuttgart.
