Arsenal and Chelsea are both set to miss out on the signing of Bayern Munich wonderkid Lennart Karl, according to reports in Germany.

The 17-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League in recent weeks, with Arsenal and Chelsea among the clubs keeping close tabs on his situation at the Allianz Arena.

Karl became Bayern’s youngest-ever goalscorer in the Champions League during their 4-0 victory over Club Brugge last week, while he also found the back of the net versus Borussia Monchengladbach on Saturday.

His current deal with Vincent Kompany’s side isn’t due to expire until 2028, although an agreement has already been reached to extend his contract by a further 12 months to ward off transfer interest.

That is according to Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, who posted on X: “Lennart Karl’s contract will automatically be extended until 2029 on his 18th birthday, 22 February 2026, and will be converted into a professional contract, including an adjustment to his salary. His current deal is valid until 2028.

“The new contract will NOT include a release clause. Karl has no intention of leaving Bayern in the summer. His goal is to make the breakthrough at Bayern, a plan supported by his advisor Michael Ballack.

“Karl’s personal target is to take part in the 2026 World Cup.”

Lennart Karl to snub Chelsea move

Former Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Ballack is currently Karl’s agent and he is evidently eager for his client to continue his development at the Allianz Arena.

The ex-Germany international spent four years as a player at Chelsea, racking up 167 appearances and winning five trophies, however he has supported Karl’s decision to stay at Bayern rather than attempting to organise a transfer to Stamford Bridge.

The attacking midfielder has two goals and one assist in 11 first-team appearances for Bayern, and his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €2 million is expected to increase exponentially if he continues to play regular senior football.

While a deal for Karl looks increasingly difficult, Chelsea are reportedly among the clubs interested in signing his current Bayern team-mate Dayot Upamecano, who is set to become a free agent next summer.
