Chelsea to hold transfer talks with surprise star after summer deal breakdown
One of Chelsea’s surprise stars this season will hold talks over his future ahead of the January transfer window after coming close to leaving Stamford Bridge in the summer.
Chelsea have used the joint-most players of any Premier League club this season, having struggled to find consistency with their results and performances which has left them ninth after nine games.
Enzo Maresca’s injury problems, combined with a lack of form from some of his attackers, has seen Tyrique George come into the fray despite seeing a €25 million move to Fulham collapse in the final minutes of the window.
The Daily Mail report that Chelsea co-director of recruitment Joe Shields phoned George after the breakdown of his move to assure him that he would be welcomed back into Maresca’s first team squad ‘with open arms’.
And George has repaid Chelsea’s decision with three goals in his last four starts in all competitions, with strikes against Lincoln City, Ajax and versus Wolves in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.
It is claimed that Chelsea will not force George to leave in January, either permanently or on loan but will hold talks with his camp to see what outcome is best for all parties.
George set to battle for minutes with Liam Delap in attack
Alongside his cup exploits, George has made four substitute appearances for Chelsea in the Premier League, often being used as a makeshift striker in the absence of Liam Delap ahead of Marc Guiu.
The forward also scored his first goal for England under-21s earlier this month but he could see his minutes reduced after Delap’s return from injury, although the summer signing’s red card against Wolves will give George another opportunity to impress versus Tottenham this weekend.
George’s current contract runs until 2027, although Chelsea are thought to have an option to extend, at it remains to be seen where his long-term future lies even if he does stay with the club for the rest of the season, with Manchester United reportedly having scouted him.
Maresca had previously suggested George needs more game time to develop, hinting that a departure may be considered in January, but much will depend on the youngster’s performances and minutes in the coming months.
