Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on the future of Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers amid suggestions that he could face the axe.

The Northern Irishman is under fire after Celtic suffered a chastening 3-1 defeat to table-topping Hearts on Sunday, leaving the Parkhead club eight points adrift of their Edinburgh counterparts.

It is the latest disappointing result for the Hoops in the Premiership, with the perennial champions having also failed to beat an out-of-sorts Rangers side as well as Hibs and suffering a 2-0 defeat to Dundee just over a week ago.

Rodgers already faced intense scrutiny earlier in the season when Celtic crashed out of the Champions League to Kazakh side Kairat Almaty to continue their indifferent form in European competitions.

Although they managed to beat Sturm Graz in the Europa League in midweek, it came off the back of a 2-0 loss to Braga, so it did little to ease the pressure on Rodgers.

Romano gives Rodgers sack verdict

Despite Celtic's disappointing start to the season, transfer insider Fabrizio Romano surprisingly revealed recently that club chiefs were ready to do everything in their power to extend Rodgers' expiring contract.

Romano suggested that if there were to be a separation after this season, it would be due to Rodgers taking up a lucrative offer from abroad, with the former Liverpool boss apparently having no shortage of suitors.

However, the mood appears to have somewhat changed after recent results. Asked whether Rodgers could face the sack, the Italian insisted that no 'final decision' has been made, but he did acknowledge that the situation could be one to watch.

"There are no indications at this stage," Romano told GIVEMESPORT. "For sure, it's a situation to follow, but there has been no final decision on this at this stage."
