OFFICIAL: West Ham appoint Nuno Espirito Santo after sacking Graham Potter
West Ham have appointed Nuno Espirito Santo as their new head coach after sacking Graham Potter.
The Hammers have moved swiftly to bring in a replacement for Potter, who was officially dismissed earlier on Saturday. Although the writing was on the wall for some time, the timing of the 50-year-old's sacking came as a surprise.
Potter was expected to be given one more game to save his job, with West Ham set to take on Everton on Monday. The head coach even took charge of Friday's pre-match press conference, oblivious to the fact that he would be out of a job less than 24 hours later.
West Ham had been preparing for Potter's exit for several weeks. Talks were held with Nuno Espirito Santo, ex-player and manager Slaven Bilic, Sean Dyche and Gary O'Neill.
The East London club have now announced that Nuno has been given the nod and appointed as Potter's successor. The 51-year-old joins after getting sacked by Nottingham Forest in September following a 3-0 loss to Potter's men - his only West Ham victory this season.
West Ham to appoint Nuno
Nuno has already taken charge of his first training session and will be in the dugout for Monday's clash with Everton, managed by former Hammers boss David Moyes.
“I am very pleased to be here and very proud to be representing West Ham United,” Nuno said at his unveiling. “My objective is to work hard to get the very best from the team and ensure that we are as competitive as we possibly can be. The work has already started and I am looking forward to the challenge that is ahead.”
The 51-year-old arrives at the London Stadium with a sparkling reputation after leading Forest into the Europa League last season. He was only sacked due to a rift with new director Edu, which saw his relationship with controversial owner Evangelos Marinakis deteriorate.
West Ham are currently 19th in the Premier League table, having only secured three points so far. Only Wolves, who have yet to pick up a point this term, have been worse.
