Newcastle are readying a surprise transfer raid for Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson to replace the Liverpool-bound Alexander Isak, according to one report.

The Magpies have accepted a €150 million (£130m) bid for the wantaway forward, but despite signing Nick Woltamade in a club-record deal, Eddie Howe wants another striker to supplement his squad.

Isak is not the only attacker that the Geordies have lost this summer. Callum Wilson departed on a free transfer and now Newcastle are looking to replace him.

In order to do this, they are set to turn towards Jackson, according to Jacob Steinberg.

“Nicolas Jackson is a possibility for Newcastle as a replacement for Isak. Striker’s move to Bayern is off but a permanent exit from Chelsea still not out of the question before the deadline,” he tweeted.

The Blues hitman is an alternative to Brentford’s Yoane Wissa, who has made it clear that he wants to move to Newcastle but whose club are blocking the way.

Chelsea stance now makes sense

Jackson’s potential move comes as a shock because the Senegal international striker appeared destined to move to Bayern Munich on loan. He was even in Germany and fought to remain with the Allianz Arena club after an injury to Liam Delap changed his future.

Chelsea’s actions in the wake of Delap's hamstring going were surprising, though.

Not only did they jet Jackson back from Munich, but they also recalled the on-loan Marc Guiu, who had made a strong start to life at Sunderland. It appeared that they were using two players to replace one.

But the Jackson deal now makes more sense. If Chelsea got wind that Newcastle were ready to give into Liverpool’s advances, they may have felt that sending him to St James’ Park was a better strategic move.

The Stamford Bridge side are limited to six loan spots for players going abroad, and Jackson’s Bayern move would have taken up the last of these for the entire season. If the Senegal striker goes to Newcastle, this would be freed up either for a Deadline Day loan or for a move in January.

In this case, Guiu will be the player who returns to Chelsea as Delap’s replacement.
