Manchester United slumped to another defeat on Saturday as Ruben Amorim's men were defeated 3-1 by Brentford.

The Red Devils headed into the clash with the Bees in high spirits. Having managed to beat Chelsea in a bizarre game at Old Trafford last week, Amorim was looking to finally end his damning record of never having managed to win back-to-back Premier League fixtures.

The clash with Brentford was seen by many as the ideal opportunity to achieve this, as the London outfit are expected to be battling against the drop this term.

However, it didn't take long for Man Utd to fall back into their old ways. The Red Devils turned over the ball in Brentford's half, and a simple ball over the defence from veteran midfielder Jordan Henderson sent Igor Thiago through on goal.

The Brazilian rifled the ball off the post and into the net with his weak foot after just eight minutes, and then doubled his tally 12 minutes later after a scramble in the box.

Sesko scores but Man Utd form can't continue

Benjamin Sesko scored his first goal for Man Utd as he pulled one back in the 26th minute, but the Red Devils attack looked disjointed for much of the game.

There were brief moments of promise, but it was evident that the constellation of new recruits - Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo - still needs time to gel. Cunha was visibly frustrated with Sesko's decision-making.

Mbeumo, who joined Man Utd after six years at Brentford, won a penalty against his former club in the second half. The usually reliable Bruno Fernandes squandered the chance to equalise, which only served to deflate the team and frustrate any hopes of a comeback.

Brentford buried the game in injury time when they hit Man Utd on the counter. Mathias Jensen thundered the ball into the back of the net from outside of the box, and the Bees even had a chance to make it four seconds before the final whistle blew.

The post-Chelsea optimism has again disappeared from Old Trafford, and the pressure will be on Amorim. Although Man Utd would prefer to keep the faith in their head coach, it is clear for everyone to see that this team is hopeless.

Indeed, it was a performance befitting of Man Utd's current place in the standings. Despite spending like a Champions League side, they are playing like a mid-table team.

This clearly can't continue. Sir Jim Ratcliffe recently assured Amorim that he is safe in the job, but he demanded that the Portuguese deliver European football - a Herculean task.

We're only a few games into the season, but Man Utd already look like they have given up. Amorim surely can't survive for much longer.
