Manchester United forward Rasmus Hojlund has completed a loan move to Napoli.

The Danish striker's Old Trafford nightmare is over. Hojlund was deemed surplus to requirements after the signing of Benjamin Sesko and pushed to the very fringes of Ruben Amorim's squad.

Despite his clear desire to stay and fight for his place, the 22-year-old has ultimately had no choice but to accept defeat and depart the Red Devils after just two years.

Initial talks with AC Milan yielded no agreement, allowing Serie A rivals Napoli to swoop in and agree a deal. This transfer has now been officially announced, with Hojlund joining on an initial loan.

However, a crucial aspect of this move is that it will become permanent if Napoli qualify for the Champions League, and this purchase obligation was key in getting the green light from the Man Utd outcast.

Napoli sign Hojlund

Hojlund rejected AC Milan because they were only willing to offer a purchase option. The Dane is keen to become the face of a long-term project and did not want to have to return to Man Utd next year.

While this is still possible if Napoli miss out on Europe's premier competition, it is highly unlikely given how strong the reigning Italian champions look under Antonio Conte.

Napoli have agreed to pay Man Utd a €6 million loan fee, and they will send a further €44m to Old Trafford when his stay with the club becomes permanent.

Due to this purchase obligation coming into effect during the season, Man Utd will be able to include this hefty €50m package on their books for the current business year, thus easing concerns over the Premier League's Profitability and Sustainability Rules.
