Ruben Amorim is pushing the WRONG Man Utd star out
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim had to be patient, but eventually he got there – or at least as close as he could hope for.
Saddled with a ‘Bomb Squad’ of players he deemed unsuitable for his plans – Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho and Antony – he slowly got rid of these perceived troublemakers.
Now, ESPN reports, there is just one player whose future is in limbo: Tyrell Malacia.
It claims that the final decision over the left-back’s future will be made by Amorim. Given that he spent the summer trying to offload the Dutchman, and got very close with a deal with Elche, it seems probable that the weekend will be spent seeking a solution in Belgium, Saudi Arabia or Portugal – countries where the transfer market is still open.
What is perhaps most surprising about Amorim’s stance is that Malacia is the player to have been singled out by the club as one to cut loose.
While United have successfully cut away much of their deadwood, the figure of Andre Onana hangs over the squad.
ESPN claims that United are comfortable having four senior goalkeepers on their books this season because Onana will be away in December for the Africa Cup of Nations.
Onana part of Amorim’s plans?
This should send a chill down the spines of supporters: it implies that Onana will continue to be a central part of Amorim’s plans until at least the January transfer window.
Senne Lammens was recruited from Royal Antwerp for €21 million on Deadline Day in what appeared to be a succession plan for the Cameroon international, who has been error-prone since his arrival from Inter Milan.
The keeper has reportedly not endeared himself with the United hierarchy this summer. Doubts over his condition were raised by staff on the first day of pre-season, while he also audaciously asked for a pay rise after a catastrophic campaign, The Athletic reports.
Worse has followed. In his only appearance since, he was badly at fault for both Grimsby goals as the Red Devils crashed to one of their most embarrassing defeats in history.
Recruiting Lammens should have been the end of Onana at Man Utd.
With Malacia heading for the exit instead of the keeper, it raises the worrying question: is Amorim cutting away the right players or just the easiest ones?
