Liverpool sign Isak: Have we just witnessed the biggest transfer window ever?
Liverpool finally have the man they have been hunting for much of the summer: Alexander Isak.
Since the Newcastle United striker went public over his desire to explore other options in July, the writing had been on the wall for the move to be made. The only surprise was that it took so long in coming.
Indeed, by the time Liverpool made the move official, the transfer window had officially shut.
But the deal was done, with Isak completing a British record €150m move to Merseyside.
It was a fitting way for Liverpool to end what will go down as one of the all-time great transfer windows. The only disappointment was missing out on Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi after Oliver Glasner threatened to quit if he was allowed to leave. With just a year left on his contract, this is a deal that will surely get done either in January or next summer.
The scale of what Liverpool otherwise achieved was remarkable. Seven players were signed for more than €35m, the Premier League transfer record was broken twice and Arne Slot has been furnished with one of the most formidable-looking squads in top-flight history.
In total, Liverpool have spent around €475m.

Is Liverpool’s summer spending a record?
Whether or not Liverpool’s total transfer outlay this summer is a record depends on exactly what fee you believe they paid for each deal – a difficult task to balance given the undisclosed nature of the majority of player prices.
Isak’s is a case in point. Newcastle claim the deal was worth €150m (£130m) but the figure that Liverpool are briefing is €144.5m. Varying figures have been quoted for Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike this summer, too.
FootballTransfers’ data points to Liverpool’s transfer window as being the most lavish ever, having spent €379.4m.
This comes out ahead of Chelsea in 2023/24, when the Blues spent €468.8m on Moises Caicedo, Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson, among others.
There will be those who claim the Reds’ spend is not as sizeable as that.
Regardless, in the sheer scale and ambition of Liverpool’s signings, there is little doubt this is the most impressive transfer window ever, with the Anfield arrivals dripping with quality and ready to lead Slot’s side to consecutive Premier League titles for the first time ever.
