Arsenal’s spectacular summer

Romano believes that Arsenal have quietly produced a transfer window masterclass, highlighting their signing of Martin Zubimendi as a deal that has gone under the radar.

He told his YouTube channel: “Arsenal won over the weekend against Nottingham Forest but you can already see the impact to the new signings. Viktor Gyokeres and Martin Zubimendi are scoring goals. They were fantastic signings, and it was quite underrated what Arsenal did this summer with Zubimendi, who is a special midfielder and a special player, but also with Cristhian Mosquera. They paid almost nothing for him, less than €20 million as a package.

“It’s also important to point out other players like Noni Madueke from Chelsea – remember the social media movement with many fans not so happy about that deal. He didn’t have any problem accepting that challenge. Now Madueke is being appreciated by Arsenal fans. It’s a good point for Arsenal after the opening Premier League games.”

Why did Man Utd not sign Donnarumma?

Gianluigi Donnarumma foiled Man Utd in the derby on Sunday, making a string of fine stops for Man City in a 3-0 win. The Red Devils even held talks about signing him in the summer.

Romano revealed: “He was an idea for Manchester United. So why didn’t they sign him?”

“There was a call with the agents of Donnarumma in July to understand the situation but there was never anything concrete. Man Utd believed that despite the transfer fee €30m plus €5m add-ons. That’s what Man City paid PSG. Man Utd didn’t want to pay big money on him: because of their financial situation, because of their salary structure and because of what they’re doing internally at the club. They didn’t want to spend a big money on Donnarumma’s salary.

“Man City had already planned for Donnarumma as a potential target, but in 2026. That was their plan. If he was free, they were prepared to enter the race. Having been made aware he was available, despite signing James Trafford, they entered very strongly. Pep Guardiola was part of the conversation and was absolutely crucial to convince Donnarumma.”

When will Amorim be sacked?

Romano talked through Ruben Amorim’s situation at Man Utd, where the derby loss only puts him under more pressure.

“It’s been a terrible start to the season so what’s the situation of Amorim? Man Utd keep sending positive messages. For sure they’re not happy about the situation. Sir Jim Ratcliffe being at the Etihad Stadium yesterday was a strong message. He wants to understand what’s happening and he’s really present in the situation,” Romano said.

“At the moment, when he says in public that he’s not going to change his philosophy, he’s sending a clear message to the club. He’s not going to change the system. He’s convinced the problem is not about the system or even the majority of his players. He’s happy with the squad he’s got. He’s convinced that it’s about the mentality of the team. He thinks the performances are good but need to improve mentally.

“Amorim thinks the system is good and the team is good. He wants a different mentality with the same mentality. He’s not going to do something completely different.

“If Man Utd fire the manager, it’s them deciding they want a different philosophy or a different vision.”
