Man City issue official response to Chelsea transfer plan
Manchester City have announced that Nico O'Reilly has signed a new long-term contract following Chelsea's failed attempt at signing him earlier this year.
The 20-year-old broke into Pep Guardiola's side last season and immediately managed to impress. O'Reilly has since become a regular for Man City and is going from strength to strength despite playing out of position.
A central midfielder by trade, the youngster has primarily played as a left-back in the first team. Despite his youth, he has not looked out of place in the Premier League and Champions League.
When he first broke onto the scene, he attracted the attention of Chelsea, who were looking to add a young midfielder last January. Eyeing a repeat of their Cole Palmer in 2023, the Blues opened talks with Man City shortly before the window closed in early February.
However, Man City learned from their Palmer mistake and made it clear to Chelsea that O'Reilly was not for sale. The Stamford Bridge club ended up signing Mathis Amougou - who has since been sold to sister club Strasbourg - and Dario Essugo instead.
O'Reilly signs Man City extension
Man City have now, somewhat belatedly, announced that O'Reilly has signed a new long-term contract with the club. An agreement over a new deal had already been reached at the end of July.
O'Reilly's new terms will run until 2030 and officially spell the end of Chelsea's pursuit of the England U21 international. “This is a day I will never forget,” the youngster said after the announcement.
“I have been at City since the age of eight, and to have made it into the first team and have played matches is a dream come true. To be rewarded with a new contract really is special. I am really proud and so is my mum! She has sacrificed so much to get me to where I am today, so I am just as happy for her as I am for myself.
“But in truth, this is just the beginning for me. I have come so far, but I want to keep pushing now, improving every day, and become the best player I can be. Here at City, with Pep as manager, I know I can do that. This is the best place for a footballer to be.
“I want to thank everyone who works in the Academy, all my teammates, Pep, the coaching staff and the City fans because without all those people supporting me along the way, none of this would have been possible for me.”
