Arsenal’s decision to sign Martin Zubimendi for €70 million this summer has been lauded by Manchester City midfielder Rodri.

Zubimendi, 26, was expected to join Liverpool last year, but he rejected the chance to join Arne Slot’s side at the last minute and he eventually opted to complete a move to Arsenal ahead of the 2025-26 campaign.

The Spain international has already established himself as a pivotal player under Mikel Arteta, starting all three of Arsenal’s Premier League fixtures so far this season, and Rodri has officially confirmed his admiration for his compatriot.

Speaking while on international duty with Spain, Rodri told reporters (via Metro): “He’s a great player. He has the discipline and mentality that can lead him to become one of the best, if he isn’t already.

“I spoke to him the other day and told him it was his time, that I was leaving him the keys to the team.”

Rodri is now 29 years old and having struggled with injury problems over the past year, Zubimendi is expected to play a prominent role within the Spain national team at the 2026 World Cup.

The former Real Sociedad star has been named in the starting XI in 10 of Spain’s last 12 matches, including both fixtures during the September international break, and Rodri believes that in Zubimendi, Arsenal have signed one of the best players in the world.

Zubimendi was one of eight players to join Arsenal during a hectic summer transfer window, with the Gunners boasting the largest net spend of any club in world football.

Arteta’s side also completed the signings of Eberechi Eze, Viktor Gyokeres, Noni Madueke, Cristhian Mosquera, Christian Norgaard, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Piero Hincapie, while 12 players departed the club, including Jorginho and Oleksandr Zinchenko (loan).
