Noni Madueke undergoes scan as Arsenal fear ACL injury
Arsenal winger Noni Madueke is undergoing a scan on his right knee after being forced off at half-time against Manchester City on Sunday afternoon.
The England international was pictured holding his knee during the latter stages of the first-half at the Emirates Stadium and he was substituted at the break, with Bukayo Saka replacing him following his return from a hamstring issue.
Madueke has enjoyed a bright start to his Arsenal career, following a €56 million move from Chelsea in July, however the club are now fearful that he could be sidelined for several months.
The Evening Standard have confirmed that Madueke is being assessed via a scan on Monday and Mikel Arteta is expected to provide a concrete update on the 23-year-old’s fitness during a press conference on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, BBC Sport journalist Con Harrison has claimed there are fears Madueke may have ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). If those fears are confirmed, the Englishman could be sidelined for the majority of the 2025-26 season and his place at next summer’s World Cup may also potentially be in doubt.
Madueke has started five of Arsenal’s six matches in all competitions so far this campaign and although he is yet to register his first goal contribution for the club, supporters have been encouraged by the dynamism he has added to the Gunners’ forward line.
How long does an ACL injury take to heal?
For professional footballers, an ACL injury usually takes between 6-9 months to heal, although players are often sidelined for 12 months before they return to action.
Wesley Fofana, for example, missed the entire 2023-24 campaign for Chelsea after rupturing his ACL in pre-season.
If Arsenal’s fears are realised, Madueke would become the third high-profile English player to suffer an ACL injury in recent weeks after James Maddison and Levi Colwill.
