Isak replacement found as Newcastle target €100m striker who destroyed Man Utd
Newcastle United are considering a move for FC Porto striker Samu Aghehowa after missing out on Benjamin Sesko to Manchester United.
Eddie Howe’s side are desperate to sign a new centre forward this summer, amid the uncertain future of Alexander Isak, and they have identified Aghehowa as a key target.
The Spain international was linked with a move to St James’ Park at the start of the week, and football transfer news expert David Ornstein has confirmed that he is on Newcastle’s radar.
The Athletic reporter posted on X: “Newcastle United considering move to sign Samu Aghehowa from FC Porto. 21yo FC Porto striker high among small number of options to bolster attack. No formal approach or guarantee it happens but Spain int’l liked by NUFC.”
Aghehowa was on the verge of joining Chelsea last summer, however his proposed move to Stamford Bridge collapsed at the last minute and the Blues opted to sign Joao Felix instead in order to finalise the sale of Conor Gallagher to Atletico Madrid.
The 21-year-old subsequently completed a move to Porto and he scored 27 goals in 45 appearances during his debut campaign with the Portuguese giants, including a brace against Man Utd in the Europa League.
His current contract, which contains a €100 million release clause, isn't due to expire until 2029, but Newcastle have earmarked him as a top target.
Newcastle chase Samu Aghehowa
Aghehowa is the latest striker to emerge as a target for Newcastle following their failure to sign Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Hugo Ekitike and the aforementioned Sesko so far this summer.
Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins and Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson are also on the club’s radar as they search for a potential replacement for Isak.
The Sweden international has handed in a transfer request in a bid to force through a move to Liverpool before the end of the summer window and he has been exiled from Newcastle training after skipping their pre-season tour of Asia.
Liverpool have seen an opening offer for Isak rejected by Newcastle, but they have been tipped to return with an improved bid, despite signing Ekitike for €95m.
