Liverpool step up Marc Guehi talks as 'RISK' taken
Liverpool are set to step up talks for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi on Monday, but a major risk will first have to be navigated.
The Reds are far from finished in the market, despite spending north of €330 million on new recruits this summer. Liverpool remain keen to add Alexander Isak to their frontline, and they would ideally also like to add another defender.
Giovanni Leoni's arrival from Parma was confirmed on Friday, with the 18-year-old Italian joining in a €35m deal. However, Marc Guehi remains Liverpool's priority centre-back target.
Talks with Crystal Palace have so far proved fruitless, despite the good relationship between the two clubs. There is a gap in valuation brought about by Guehi's contract situation.
With just a year left to run on his deal, Liverpool are not willing to spend big on the 25-year-old. At present, there is still no guarantee that this transfer will materialise as the Anfield club could opt to wait until January to agree a free transfer for next summer.
Liverpool to 'recommence' Guehi talks
However, Liverpool have not yet given up on this deal. There are still two weeks to go in the window and, according to BBC reporter Sami Mokbel, talks with Palace will 'recommence' on Monday.
Liverpool got their Premier League campaign off to a good start with an emotional 4-2 victory over Bournemouth on Friday, but Palace have yet to play their first league match.
The Eagles will travel to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea on Sunday, and talks over Guehi have been put on ice for the time being. According to Mokbel, the England international will start for Palace, which is a risk as an injury could jeopardise his move.
Palace are actively looking to sell Guehi as they do not want to lose him on a free, so opting to utilise him is a gamble. Mokbel believes that Guehi 'would go' to Liverpool and adds that there are 'definitely legs in that deal.'
