Manchester City are making a late bid to ruin Liverpool’s final week of the transfer window, with Pep Guardiola’s men ready to hijack a key signing for the Anfield club.

Liverpool continue to chase Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak, but Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi has emerged as arguably the Merseysiders’ most important target late in the window.

Arne Slot has played down the value of getting the deal for Isak over the line, suggesting that the Reds see a move for Guehi as the more vital of the two moves.

Manchester City are out to ruin Liverpool’s plan, according to The Daily Star.

If City sell both Manuel Akanji and Nathan Ake, who are wanted respectively by Galatasaray and Everton, they will then turn their attentions to Guehi, who is expected to move for a fee in the region of €40m (£35m).

The England centre-back is a player Crystal Palace are willing to sell. He is out of contract next summer and the Eagles do not want to risk losing him for nothing.

Palace chairman Steve Parish explained: “It's a difficult situation. If you're in Europe, the financial rules are a lot tighter than the Premier League.

“Players leaving on a free is not an ideal situation for a football club. That's a situation we will have to see in the next 11 days.”

Slot: Liverpool have enough going forward

Liverpool manager Slot played down the importance of signing Isak prior to the Monday night clash with Newcastle at St James’ Park.

The Dutchman believes the Reds are covered across the forward line.

“If you see Florian Wirtz as an attacking option as well, you can make it five forwards available,” he said.

“Yes, we’ve sold Darwin, we’ve brought in Hugo, Luis is gone, but maybe you can see Florian as his replacement. Then you have Jeremie Frimpong who, when he is fit, is definitely an option to play as a winger as well. So then we end up at six. We have six players who can play in three positions.”

With Rio Ngumoha having sparkled in pre-season, Liverpool may be more intent on signing Guehi prior to the transfer deadline than Isak, making Man City’s interest in the 25-year-old all the less welcome.
