Liverpool are Marc Guehi’s likely destination should he leave Crystal Palace before the end of the transfer window, with manager Arne Slot having already hinted at the possibility of a deal.

The Reds will face Palace in the Community Shield at Wembley on Sunday, with Guehi set to play a starring role for the FA Cup winners.

With only one year left on his contract, though, there remains speculation that the 25-year-old could depart Selhurst Park before the transfer window shuts on 1 September.

Liverpool are leading the way to sign the centre-back, who has been one of the most coveted defenders in England’s top-flight in recent months, The Telegraph reports.

Newcastle are not thought to be seeking a centre-back currently as they seek a forward, with the future of Liverpool target Alexander Isak still in the air.

Chelsea were considered to be a more serious contender to sign Guehi following a serious injury to Levi Colwill, but it is reported that they are seeking alternative options.

Arne Slot drops Guehi transfer hint

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has indicated that he wants to see a stronger defensive performance from his team in the weeks ahead – starting with Sunday’s clash against Palace.

“What we need to improve is to concede less, so not only conceding goals but also chances, because against Yokohama Marinos we only conceded one, but they had, in my opinion, too many chances as well,” he said.

This could mean that the Reds target Guehi before the end of August. Last summer, Newcastle had a bid of €75 million (£65m) rejected.

With 12 months remaining on his contract, Crystal Palace are unlikely to be able to demand such a fee again. The player’s Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) has dipped to €41.6m.

Liverpool have already spent more than €300m in the transfer market this summer, with the arrival of Florian Wirtz for €125m a Premier League record.
