Xavi Simons to Chelsea: The state of play revealed amid transfer delay

Chelsea are reportedly yet to submit a formal offer for RB Leipzig superstar Xavi Simons, despite heavy rumours of a summer transfer.

The Netherlands international has set his sights on completing a Stamford Bridge switch, as per multiple reports, and he failed to turn up to pre-season training last week in a bid to force through a move.

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Simons reiterated his desire to join Chelsea this weekend, during talks with Leipzig, while the 22-year-old has removed his current employers from his Instagram bio, with fans pointing this out as a major transfer hint.

However, The Athletic have confirmed that an official bid has not yet been lodged by Chelsea.

Enzo Maresca’s side have reportedly held informal negotiations with Leipzig as they attempt to reach a transfer agreement, but a concrete offer hasn’t followed these talks.

Chelsea are currently prioritising player sales and their pursuit of Simons has therefore hit an unexpected delay, with the club finalising the exits of Armando Broja, Lesley Ugochukwu (both to Burnley), Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (to Everton) and Carney Chukwuemeka (to Borussia Dortmund).

Academy wonderkid Tyrique George also wants to leave Stamford Bridge on a permanent deal, despite Chelsea’s initial desire to send him out on loan, and RB Leipzig are among the clubs tracking his situation.

He could therefore be used as a makeweight in a transfer for Simons, although concrete negotiations regarding a swap deal haven’t taken place.

Simons scored 11 goals and provided eight assists in 33 appearances for Leipzig last season, and the Bundesliga club are demanding a transfer fee of €70 million from Chelsea.

Although the Blues are yet to reach a full agreement for the Dutchman, Florian Plettenberg has confirmed there is a “strong feeling” that Simons will join Chelsea, with Maresca’s side likely to ramp up talks once the aforementioned sales of Broja, Ugochukwu, Dewsbury-Hall and Chukwuemeka go through.
