OFFICIAL: Chelsea defender Renato Veiga completes Villarreal transfer
Chelsea defender Renato Veiga has completed a permanent transfer to Villarreal in a club-record deal for the Spanish side.
The Portugal international has officially left Chelsea after just 12 months, six of which were spent on loan at Juventus. Veiga temporarily left the Blues in January after growing frustrated with his role in Enzo Maresca's side.
With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, Veiga wanted to be a regular starter at centre-back rather than a back-up left-back, so he made the move to Turin and impressed in Serie A.
However, this wasn't enough to convince Chelsea, and a summer departure had been expected for some time. After links with Borussia Dortmund and other suitors, Villarreal emerged as his most credible next destination.
Veiga quickly agreed personal terms with the LaLiga outfit as he was keen to link up with the Champions League participants, who have made a significant financial commitment for the 22-year-old.
Veiga joins Villarreal
Villarreal have agreed to match Chelsea's asking price of around €30 million, which means that Veiga has become the Spanish club's most expensive signing ever.
It is understood that the Blues have retained a sizeable sell-on clause, so they will benefit handsomely from the defender's next move. The Portugal international has signed a contract until 2032, so it seems that clubs are beginning to copy Chelsea's policy of handing out huge deals.
Villarreal's club website has described Veiga in the most glowing terms, writing: "Renato Palma Veiga is a superb left-footed centre-back, tall, strong and technically gifted. He stands out for his physical power, his ability in one-on-one duels and his excellent ball-striking ability.
"In addition to being able to play on either side of central defence, he can also operate as a left-back or even as a midfielder. A true Champions League-level defender."
