Chelsea have made a formal offer for Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Saturday is shaping up to be another hugely eventful day at Stamford Bridge. At lunchtime, the Blues defeated local rivals Fulham 2-0 in the Premier League in a game that saw Liam Delap go down with a serious hamstring injury.

After the match, Enzo Maresca hinted at another new striker signing, but rather than adding a fresh face, Chelsea have opted to request that Nicolas Jackson return from Germany.

The Senegal international is in Munich to join Bayern on a €15 million loan deal with a €65m buy option, but it now looks as though this transfer will be cancelled.

As if that isn't enough drama, Chelsea have now also made a formal bid for Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez after holding talks with his representatives in recent days.

Chelsea make Lopez bid

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Blues' opening offer has clocked in at around €40m, which is some way short of the €70m-€90m asking price that has been touted in recent days.

Romano reports that the bid was submitted immediately after the final whistle of the Fulham game. What's interesting about this offer is that the consensus in the media has been that the Blues will only act on their interest if given encouragement by the player or Barcelona.

Given that they have now made their bid, this would suggest that Lopez has opened the door to a potential move to Stamford Bridge. By contrast, Barcelona boss Hansi Flick stated earlier on Saturday that he wants Fermin to stay.

It remains to be seen if €40m will be enough to get Barcelona to sell or if Chelsea will have to improve their offer. What is already clear, though, is that it will be a hectic final few hours of the transfer window in West London.
