Aston Villa have been unleashed in the transfer market thanks to the sale of Jacob Ramsey to Newcastle, and top of Unai Emery’s shopping list is a Chelsea star he knows well.

Villa have endured a frustrating summer that has seen them limited by the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Emery’s side have added only three players to their ranks over the summer months, with Evann Guessand the big-money arrival from Nice in €30 million deal.

Ramsey’s €45m sale, though, will allow the Birmingham club to make late moves in the market, and according to Sky Sport Deutschland, they have targeted Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson.

“Aston Villa have added Nicolas Jackson to their shortlist and are closely monitoring his situation. Talks have already taken place,” Florian Plettenberg confirms on X.

“Several clubs are interested. FC Bayern have also gathered information, but a move to Munich is not happening.

“The 24-year-old versatile striker is still on the verge of leaving Chelsea. Aston Villa now there.”

Fabrizio Romano suggested that the Senegal forward might be Serie A-bound this summer.

“Keep an eye on Nicolas Jackson. He’s expected to leave Chelsea. He’s still looking for opportunities. There was interest from Newcastle but no bid, while there is still some interest from Premier League clubs but keep an eye on Italy for possibilities for Nicolas Jackson,” he said.

“Milan love him but the financial point is the crucial one.”

Emery laments spending constraints

Emery, who previously coached Jackson at Villarreal, will also be constrained by his club’s lack of spending power.

He lamented the Premier League’s rules in his programme notes for Saturday’s clash against Newcastle, when he wrote: “We cannot avoid that the summer has been challenging because the financial rules were conditioning our investment in the squad. Financial control rules came to football to avoid bankruptcies and payment defaults with a good purpose.

“But as professionals we should review it, as this good tool will become a limitation for clubs that are doing good management, who’ll never be allowed to dream and get higher goals because the revenue, key for these financial rules, needs time to come to reality after sporting success.”

Ramsey’s sale, though, has opened the door for an arrival at Villa Park, and there is little doubt that Jackson is an option.
