Arsenal agree deal to sign Piero Hincapie - David Ornstein
Arsenal have agreed a deal with Bayer Leverkusen to sign Piero Hincapie, according to David Ornstein.
The Ecuador international is set to link up with the Gunners after expressing a desire to leave Leverkusen. Hincapie has been on Arsenal's radar for years, with the versatile defender having been their Riccardo Calafiori alternative last summer.
Despite managing to land Calafiori in 2024, Arsenal have retained their interest in Hincapie and David Ornstein of The Athletic has now confirmed that a deal to sign him has been struck with Bayer 04.
Arsenal's renewed push for the 23-year-old has been brought about by Porto's interest in Jakub Kiwior. The Poland international is set to join the Portuguese giants on an initial loan deal with a €25 million purchase obligation.
The North London club have agreed a similar deal with Leverkusen. Hincapie will first join Arsenal on loan and there will be an option to make his transfer permanent next summer for a sizeable €52 million. The Bundesliga side will also retain a 10 per cent sell-on clause.
Arsenal agree Hincapie deal
Hincapie will sign a five-year contract with Arsenal if his stay at the Emirates is made permanent next year, with the Ecuador international now the second player Mikel Arteta and Andrea Berta have managed to steal from under the nose of rivals Tottenham after Eberechi Eze last week.
Spurs were first to express an interest in Hincapie, even making a formal loan offer with a purchase obligation. However, the player had his heart set on a move to the red half of North London when he heard of the Gunners' desire to bring him in.
Hincapie is initially expected to become a replacement for Jakub Kiwior as a back-up left-back and centre-back, but it would not be a surprise if he were to supplant Riccardo Calafiori as the starting full-back on the left.
The Italian has struggled with injuries during his time at Arsenal, making Hincapie potentially a more reliable option. The Ecuador international can play at centre-back, left-back and even as a left wing-back.
