Leverkusen play hardball with Arsenal in Hincapie talks
Bayer Leverkusen are refusing to accept any offers from Arsenal below Piero Hincapie's release clause.
The Gunners have made Hincapie their top defensive target in the final week of the summer transfer window.
Tottenham and Chelsea also like the Ecuadorian but Arsenal lodged an official approach on Monday, as per The Athletic’s David Ornstein.
Leverkusen play hardball on Hincapie
Leverkusen do not want to sell Hincapie having already seen their squad gutted this summer, losing the likes of Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Jonathan Tah and Granit Xhaka.
An, according to Kicker and Bild, they have told Arsenal they will only sell Hincapie if the Gunners meet the €60 million release clause in his contract.
Arsenal are now said to be considering making an initial loan offer with the obligation fee paid a year from now.
Hincapie was spotted in tears after Leverkusen’s 2-1 loss to Hoffenheim on Saturday, suggesting that may have been his last game for the club.
The Gunners have already agreed personal terms with the Ecuador star and are now aiming to finalise a deal with Bayer Leverkusen.
On Tuesday, Fabrizio Romano posted on X: “Piero Hincapie has said yes to Arsenal and personal terms have been agreed, long term deal ready!
“Understand Hincapie favours AFC and also seen as ideal signing by Arteta. Arsenal prepare opening bid, likely loan + obligation to buy… with Kiwior to FC Porto, soon.”
Hincapie is expected to provide depth at both centre-back and left-back for Arsenal, with the 23-year-old set to compete with William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes, Cristhian Mosquera, Riccardo Calafiori and Myles Lewis-Skelly for a starting berth.
Hincapie has spent over four years at Leverkusen since joining from Talleres in 2021.
He has made over 150 appearances, famously winning the Bundesliga unbeaten in 2024.
He has been capped 46 times by Ecuador.
