Martinez to Man Utd one step closer as Aston Villa sign replacement
Aston Villa are set to sign Stade Brest goalkeeper Marco Bizot amid the ongoing uncertainty over the future of Emiliano Martinez.
The Argentine shot-stopper has been widely expected to be on the move this summer. Martinez was very emotional at Aston Villa's final home game of the past season and appeared to say goodbye to the club's faithful ahead of a transfer.
However, so far, there have been no major developments. To be sure, clubs like Man Utd and Atletico Madrid have expressed an interest in signing the 2022 World Cup winner, but Martinez remains on the books at Villa Park.
The 32-year-old is reportedly very keen on a move to Man Utd, but signing a new shot-stopper is not a priority for the Red Devils as things stand. While they are not opposed to replacing Andre Onana, they have more important matters to attend to in the market right now.
Martinez is still expected to depart, however, and Villa are looking to ensure a smooth transition as they prepare for the departure of one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
Aston Villa sign Bizot
According to L'Equipe and The Athletic, Aston Villa are currently in the process of finalising the signing of Stade Brest No.1 Marco Bizot, a one-time Netherlands international.
The 34-year-old has been a reliable shot-stopper for the French side in recent seasons, and he has reportedly also been attracting interest from elsewhere in England, with promoted Leeds having taken a liking to him as well.
However, Villa are understood to be on the verge of signing him, with his arrival set to be formally completed 'in the coming hours.' On paper, Bizot will be signed not as a replacement for Martinez but for Robin Olsen.
Should Martinez indeed depart, Villa will look to replace him with a more high-profile name. Lille star Lucas Chevalier has been touted as a potential option for the Birmingham giants.
