Bizarre Man Utd twist: Players want Antony to STAY
Several senior Manchester United players believe that exiled winger Antony is an ideal fit for Ruben Amorim's system.
The Brazilian is expected to depart Old Trafford this summer after spending the second half of last season out on loan at Real Betis, where he managed to revive his faltering career.
Prior to his move to Seville, Antony had mostly been on the outside looking in at Man Utd. Even his main backer, Erik ten Hag, eventually appeared to lose faith in him, and the writing was on the wall when the Dutchman was replaced by Ruben Amorim.
Unfortunately for Man Utd, who are desperate to offload the 25-year-old as they need funds, the Antony situation remains unresolved. Real Betis have been trying to bring him back all summer, and the attacker is keen to return.
However, discussions between Man Utd and Betis continue to be a slog. Finances are the biggest hurdle for the LaLiga side, but it must also be said that they are in no hurry to strike a deal because they know that the Red Devils will only become more desperate.
Man Utd players still have faith in Antony
Ruben Amorim recently left the door open for Man Utd's 'Bomb Squad' to be reintegrated into the side should no suitable offers arrive, but many viewed this as merely damage limitation to avoid completely devaluing the club's unwanted players.
However, it seems that Man Utd's squad wouldn't be opposed to Antony coming back into the fray. In fact, according to Ben Jacobs, several senior players, including new signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, believe that he is an ideal fit for Amorim's system.
That said, a lot of things would have to happen - or, rather, not happen - for this to become a realistic possibility. The journalist also states that Man Utd will reluctantly sanction a loan later in the window if they can't get the right fee for Antony.
This is likely what Real Betis are banking on, and so far their gamble is paying off. Atletico Madrid are monitoring Antony's situation but don't view him as a priority. There is tentative Saudi interest, but Betis remain his most concrete suitors.
