Manchester United could capitalise on Arsenal’s striker search by making a big money deal for a number nine of their own in light of Viktor Gyokeres’ impending move to the Emirates.

After months of speculation, Gyokeres appears to be Mikel Arteta’s chosen option to strengthen up front after agreeing personal terms over a move, while Arsenal are understood to be in advanced negotiations over a fee with Sporting.

Gyokeres was Arsenal’s top target alongside Benjamin Sesko but RB Leipzig’s demands of around €90 million, combined with frustration over personal terms, appears to have swayed the Gunners’ decision to opt against moving for the Slovenian.

The development will have disappointed Sesko, with the 22-year-old having been a long-term target for Arsenal, but he is still expected to leave Leipzig this summer, although his choices of club may be dwindling due to the huge financial package required.

However, CaughtOffside report that United could emerge as a contender for Sesko’s signature as a ‘long-term investment’ compared to Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins, whom the Red Devils have also held talks with.

The likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and Real Madrid have also held an interest in Sesko but neither are likely to make a move for him this summer, while Saudi Pro League sides are also keen on the youngster, although he has been warned off such a move by his national team manager, leaving United as one of the frontrunners instead.

How Man Utd could afford Sesko transfer this summer

Leipzig’s huge demands would prove a stumbling block were United to formalise their interest, although they could be forced to consider lower offers later in the summer, with Sesko still keen on leaving.

United’s efforts are still focused on closing a deal for Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, which could deplete their entire remaining budget at €80m, but adding another striker is still among Ruben Amorim’s top priorities this summer.

There is optimism that United can raise substantial funds through the sales of Jadon Sancho, who is closing in on a move to Juventus, and Marcus Rashford, while the likes of Antony, Rasmus Hojlund and Tyrell Malacia could all leave before the end of the summer too.

United are also expected to bank significant money from sell-on clauses for Anthony Elanga, in talks over a €60m move to Newcastle, and Maxi Oyedele, the club’s former academy graduate currently at Legia Warsaw and wanted by a number of sides in Europe.

Any major outgoings, combined with Leipzig potentially lowering their asking price, could pave a pathway for United to sign Sesko and give them a young talent capable of leading Amorim’s side next season.
