Arsenal reach agreement to sign Viktor Gyokeres - Ornstein
Arsenal have reportedly reached an agreement to sign Sporting CP centre forward Viktor Gyokeres.
The Gunners have been locked in negotiations with Sporting for several weeks and the Portuguese giants have now confirmed they have agreed a deal in principle with Arsenal, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.
Gyokeres has already agreed personal terms with Mikel Arteta’s side, and Arsenal are in the process of completing a deal to bring the Sweden star to north London.
Arsenal were initially offering an initial fee of €65 million for Gyokeres, however Sporting CP president Frederico Varandas has been unwilling to sanction a sale unless a guaranteed sum of €70m was committed by the Gunners.
This has caused immense tension between the two clubs, but Arsenal have now agreed to pay €63.5m, plus €10m in add-ons.
Viktor Gyokeres wants Premier League return
Ahead of his proposed move to Arsenal, Gyokeres has admitted his desire to return to the Premier League following an underwhelming stint at Brighton & Hove Albion as a youngster.
“It’s one of the biggest leagues in Europe,” Gyokeres told L'Equipe in a fresh interview.
“I spent several years there without being able to play a single match. So, of course, it’s something I’d like to do. It would be great revenge!”
However, Gyokeres refused to confirm reports that he has gone on strike in order to force through a transfer to Arsenal.
“Maybe,” the 27-year-old said when asked if he would leave Sporting this summer. “That’s football, you never know. I don’t think about it; we’ll see what happens. If something happens, it will. The most important thing for me is to play for a club that really wants me.”
Gyokeres has scored 97 goals in 102 appearances for Sporting and he is set to become Arsenal’s new starting striker.
